Each of these small vases are no taller than 4 inches. Wall thickness is 3/16 inch all the way to the bottom. They are turned through a 1/4 inch opening. The hollowing tool used is an allen wrench held in vice grips. Then an ebony insert with 1/8th inch opening is placed in them. This is how small scale woodturners can get the most out of thier scrap pieces. The finish is laquer and the wood is maple burl.

Fantastic turnings. I’d love to see the allen wrench and how you put a cutting edge on it . I had never heard of doing that before.

These are beautiful! Wish you had put a coin or pin as a reference to their size. I too would like to see the allen wrench you made into the tool. Thanks for sharing.

Nice looking hollow forms. How do you measure the wall thickness?

Wall thickness is measured with a laser caliper. Which is a reference wire mounted on the end of a boring bar and a boom arm holding a laser. Distance is measured between the laser and the tip of the wire. Wire goes in the opening and down the wall. As the laser passes the radius of the turning you get your thickness for that point.

Another impressive turning plus a great finish. I’d like to see that laser set up.

did you post the equipment setup? I’m kind of in a bind, been making some semi-hollow bowls (don’t make the opening too small, as I only have a bowl gouge) but I’d like to start making some hollow vessels without having to shell out a lot of dough to get started. any article references that you used would be great, i’m going to google right now though hehe….love all your work dale, you’re always an inspiration
