This is a carving I was commissioned to create. The customer was looking for the likeness of Jack Nicholson in “The Shining” when he busts through the door with an axe and says, “Here’s Johnny!” I’m very pleased with this one :)

I carve using rotary hand tools, very similar to those of a dentist. I like to add a bit of oil paint to accentuate my cuts.

This carving is in a piece of Pine driftwood. The rotten spots of wood and nature of Pine made this piece interesting in a few areas. I’m very glad it held together.

Josh, that is so lifelike, great job mate.
Thanks for sharing Johnny with us.
Congratulations.

Bob.

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.

When I first caught sight of that face I immediately thought – Thats Jack Nicholson, not Johnny Carson… Then I read your story, Wow!! wonderful likeness…..

Great job!

I like to dable with carving but don’t have near the talent that you do. I only use chisels and have a very enjoyable time plus learn a lot about wood grain.

Easy to see how you have clients paying for your work.
