The pieces you are looking at are a Platter 18 inches in diameter and a vase 12 inches tall 11 inches wide at the girth. The platter is turned from quilted maple and the vase is turned from yellow birch. The tie dye effect is a technique I devloped using anline die and bursting it with alcohol. The final finish is laquer. The vase was fitted later with an insert and lid as the final resting place of a good friend of mine and one amazing wood carver named Jack Blackwell. The vase was his most favorite piece, he said the color and the quilting made him happy.

That is great! I really like the tie die effect with the rough look of the wood there too. How did you do the tie die? Bursting without alcohol sounds like a lot of fun. Do you burst yourself with it or the wood? :)
