When my neighbor requested that I design some type of stand where he could display an old ships compass that he had inherited from his dad, I remembered some American Ebony wedges sent to me as box filler when i purchased some precut boards. Using simple hand tools, I drilled and then sawed out the mounting hole, sanded wider to fit and then finished with gel urethane.
My buddy was quite pleased and plans to hand down to his child. Nice to be associated with an heirloom.

Looks like the wood and compass were meant to be together. Great design!

Great mount for the compass. It really makes an impressive combination.

What I like is that the compass seems like a boat afloat in a sea of ebony.

Thank you all for your kind comments and hearty welcome to your clan. If anyone is interested, my source for the ebony is having a summer “firesale” this June 2007 on cut logs. You can email him at “a102degrees@rgv.rr.com”
for more information. Last I heard he was selling a 2-3foot log for about $25 including shipping, (but dont quote me)
