This is my second creation from the mahogany stash (click here for the first). I built this lamp for my sisters 50th birthday present. The whole thing started out as a single board about four feet long x 7 inches wide x 1.5 inches thick. I first re sawed the board into three 1/4 inch thick strips. I then cut 9 inch wide sections out of each one, and carefully marked them so that I could later book-match them. The book-matching worked well, and you can’t really see the glue lines at all. The circular holes were covered with a 1/8” thick fiberglass sheeting material. I like the cross hatching effect that it displays when illuminated.

That looks nice. What did you do for the lighting system?

I attached a simple lamp socket to the base on the inside. It uses a sixty Watt bulb. The lamp is mainly for decoration, and not a significant source of light. If you turn the lamp over you can get to all the wired components. If you look closely to the attached pictures you can see a button on the wooden base for turning the lamp on and off.

Hmmm…. that’s exactly what my Dad said when he first saw it. My initial response to him was, “who puts a lid on a lamp? You’ll burn down the house!” Now, hearing the same question from you is making me wonder about the design.
I’m open to constructive critisism. I realize that it is a unique design. I’m curious to hear what people really think.
