Project Information

Well let me tell you guys a story about this. I always went fishing and hung out at the same lake for all my life and always passed this burl a million times. One day my neighbor said we should go cut that burl out when it warms up, we both never gave it a thought. He went to cut in it and it was pretty rotted out so he said screw it. Well a few months went by and I was home on a sunny warm day and decided to cut it down and mill it. This is what I came up with. Its around 3/4 inches thick. Its beautiful looking but as you can see its been though some rough times.

I wasn't all to sure what to do with it. I don't have the heart to throw it out. I was wondering what would you guys do with it? Any ideas? I was thinking about filling the rotted parts with polyurathaine and getting it nice and smooth and makeing a shelf out of it. What wouild you guys suggest?

Depending on the size I personally would make a an end table. Take a look at a piece I did out of bristelcone pine. I am getting it posted today. Maybe it will gie you an idea. No matter what you do it is a beautiful piece of wood.

make some sort of little table, and lay some glass over the top of it to cover the holes and make it usable.

They make great clocks, or antler mounts, or picture collages. Check out my gallery. I found the same thing, maybe you'll get some ideas. mike

Thanks for the responses guys.

I was thinking about a small table with a glass top but I just have no where to put it. I was also throwing around the idea for using one for deer antlers (gotta get a nice buck this year :p) and the other for a clock. Kinda stole the ideas from jockmike2! But I guess for now I'm just goin to hold onto them. Real neat to look at!

You could fill the voids with an epoxy/saw dust mixture. The edge could be kept as a "live edge" or a geometric shape, trim just enough to give it a cleaner look. The the larger one could be an end table and for the smaller one you can and put some cork or wooden feet on it and it's a nice trivet for the center of your dining table.
