Raw

Project by trifern posted 233 days ago 432 views 1 time favorited 17 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This hollow form is turned from end grain maple. It measures 6.5 inches tall by 5 inches wide and is finished with Waterlox. I really enjoy coloring pieces with aniline dyes. This piece however represents Mother Nature in the raw with no makeup.

All comments and critiques are welcomed and appreciated.

Sometimes it’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature (of course you’ve proved the opposite many times here!).
Beautiful form and grain with a sweet finish, as always.

It is hard to beat mother nature. Especially when she is naked (-:
Your dye work continues to impress me and If I ever get caught up on the other things I “need” to do I may try to emulate your work. I assume you are selling these or your house must be getting rather crowded. Either that or like summer Zucchini your friends won’t answer the door because you are trying to give away another vase (-;

Joe I wish I had your eye for picking such beautiful pieces. Not too shabby a turning job either.

Sometimes you just need to let the grain speak for itself! Looks great Joe!

Very Nice. What hollowing tools do you use? did you turn the vessel green and cure it or did you use cured wood? Really looks great – Always like to see your stuff – and your gallery page is awesome

Thanks for all the feedback. I appreciate all of them.

TulipHillWoodWorks, I am using the Trent Bosch hollowing tools. Most of my pieces lately have been turned from green timber. I just turn them thin, slather some finish on the outside, and let them be. Some move, some don’t. As long as the walls are consistently thin, they rarely crack.

Thanks for the info Trifern! – another question – what do you do with all the shavings – I had no idea I was going to end up with a small mountain.

During the recent months I have been burning the shavings on my garden. During the warm month I will use as much and also compost them.
