After dealing with the impossibly stupid position of my plane stop being on the left side of the bench, and the real difficulty it presents, I decided to take a clue from Roy Underhill and make a simple bench hook / plane stop so I can plane away from my body instead of sideways.
I stood in front of my bench and measured the extent of my normal arm swing forward when planing and determined that 12” would be a comfortable distance for most operations, so that is where I put the first row of holes for the stop dogs.
I then thought about boxes I’d built in the past, and decided that I’d not normally ever need to plane a surface longer than 16”, so that is where I put the second row of dog holes.
I planed the stop down to 3/16” since I doubt that I will ever plane anything thinner than 1/4”, and super glued dogs into the stop.
It really works great. Should have done this last year!!!
