Perusing random YouTube videos can be dangerous. One night while jumping around different videos I came across this video to make a wooden sword by HappyAtom. My wife shook her head when the glint of “scrap wood project” appeared in my eyes.
After scrounging through my pile of scrap wood, I found a piece of 1×3 clear radiata pine, leftovers from my first project (coffee table). It has been bouncing around my basement for well over 5 years. I decided it would be a good piece for this project and got to work. I cutt the rough shape in about 10 minutes on a bandsaw and using a belt sander for the shaping (mistake). After 15 minutes of mangling the wood, I remembered that the first project taught me never to blindly follow a YouTube video’s instructions. Ironic that the remnants of that project (must be a cursed project) would remind me of the same thing.
So just under 30 minutes into the project, I decided carving with my chisels and smoothing with a block plane made more sense. After another 30 with the chisel, block plane, and sand paper and you have the results above, the ubiquitous fantasy RPG wooden sword. I can’t wait to give it to my son to begin his very own RPG quest.
