This is an office workstation I built for our office. It was constructed from African Mahogany and top coated with about 4 coats of pre-cat lacquer. The top was covered in laminate to help eliminate pen and pencil marks.
The first picture is a general overview and shows the island plan storage
The second picture shows a modified file cabinet that also doubles as a half size plans holder
The third picture shows the near invisible edge of the Burgess Edge edge banding system I used.
Some of the more enjoyable aspects of this project included turning the pedestal for the island and bending the mahogany for the island radius:)

Oooooooooooo. Now that’s a classy piece. I love the simple lines, abundance of workspace and openess of the design. That’s a really nice piece, RJ!

Thanks:) The aspect that always seems to be lacking in an engineering/architectural workstation is a place to organize and stash plans and project reference materail. So far this has worked out pretty well and yes I think you can get about 4 full size plans set out if needed or two with plenty of room to work:)

I’m very impressed! Your workmanship is amazing. The file cabinets are so simple, yet the dovetail joints make them special.
How did you do the edging around the radius?

I’d love to have a workstation like that. The mahogany and finish are exceptional. How long did it take you build? Very nice!

Thanks again for the kind words:) The edging around the radius is actually a bent up lamination. Just 1/8” pieces glued and clamp and a form to match the raduis:) Here’s a link to the edge banding system I used http://www.burgessedge.com/. There are now other’s on the market that are considerably cheaper but I purchased my set 6 years or so ago so… I think I have about 50 hours in it maybe a couple more with design and misc stuff. I think I probably spent the most time on fitting the file cabinet doors. I had never done that before so…

Very nice…as a designer myself I can appreciate the large plan space. You can never have too much.

I looked at your Flickr page and saw that really nice roll around workstation. I hope you post the plans over here (or at least let us know when they are avaialble). I already have a sketch in my notebook. I need something exactly like that for my “shop”.
Excellent work BTW.

You have a lot of desk space to open plans on. Great job. I also like the view.

grovemadman thank you:) it’s really more basic than it looks though. I bet you could build this in your sleep!! Probably the most advanced portions were the half round end and pedistal turning but other than that… it was just some dados and dovetails:)
