This was one of my first projects about 3 1/2 years ago. I built it out of free oak. There’s a hardwood dealer in our area that does custom milling and builds doors. They have barrels of cut-offs that the shop manager burns in a wood stove each week. If you get in early and are nice to the guys working on weekend, they’ll let you pick shorts out of the barrels (usually 12-24 inches long by 4-8 inches wide and 1-3 inches thick)... which are perfect for boxes, small bowls, and small projects such as this.
