Portable Desk -- Early Laptop

This writer’s box is inspired by a formal secretary desk. Unfortunately it also resembles a breadbox. That notion out of the way, it is a neat way to carry your writing materials anywhere so you can write, pay bills, or doodle.

The box is made of 1/2” thick cherry. The interior compartments are dovetail joined together. The slide out drawer for pens and pencils is walnut and slides in and out on a sliding dovetail guide.

The handles are made of walnut and inlaid on the top and on the drop-leaf.

The intereior “floor” is baltic birch and left natural to brighten up the interior.

I had tried to keep all metal out of the project, but finally caved and used some brass hinges and a small brass knob on the pen/pencil drawer.

This is an early cordless laptop/word processor unit. I have considered making a stand so it could have its own “docking station”.

Nice job, a docking station would be great and an excuse to get back in the shop.

That’s neat. I could see myself using one of those as an organizer to tidy up my desk really.

Have your say...
