This was a mother’s day gift that I made this year. It features a walnut frame, birds eye maple veneer on plywood background, and a padauk cardinal. Finish was clear spray shellac.

I used my Stanley #55 and #45 to make the molding and rabbet for the frame. I hammer veneered the birds eye veneer to 1/8” plywood and glued it into the frame. I used a slightly modified template from Sheila Landry’s Cardinal Napkin Holder & Plaque, mostly just scaled down in size a little. The whole thing, frame included, is about 3.5”x5.5”.

Thanks! Relatively pleased with it for my first real scroll saw project.

Thanks Dan. It took me a little while to get the combination of woods figured out, but happy with the results myself, as well.

Very nicely done, especially wood choice. Beware however, that scrolling is very addictive so imagine you may become a member of SSA one of these days.

It’s a real nice gift. I bet your mother loved this.
