Shaker Influenced Pine Bedroom Set

Project by jack1 posted 247 days ago 496 views 0 times favorited 7 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This set was completed during the summer of 2007. I used douglas fir for the bureau top and the 4×4 posts for the headboard, the rest was all solid pine (except for 1/4” ply backs for stiffening on the bureau and night stands). The headboard is made up of pine 2×4’s and two douglas fir 4×4’s. These have centered dados that hold the solid pine panels much like rail and stile cabinet doors. The two center stiles are dadoed and formed on the router table to give visual interest. The night stands are also constructed of solid pine panels. The bureau top is composed of 2×6” douglas fir planks laminated together. I used steel bottom runners for the drawers and lots of pocket screws!
All materials came from H D. If you take your time, you can find decent wood. Where we are in CA there is not anyone that carries a lot of pine so you get what you can where you can. I finished the pieces with Min-Wax cherry and also used their semi-gloss spray by the same company. I completed the finish with a hand rubbing of wax (Johnson’s). We have a “Sleep Number” bed attached directly to the headboard. It is a solid as a rock.

Great wood all around, clean designs, looks good for a wood man. Nice furniture.

Nice bedroom set jack. Your finishing efforts turned out well. Did you do anything about the moisture in the H. D. material? Here in the east, the wood from the big box stores is typically 12 percent or so.

Nice set. I really like the night stand very much. The woodgrain pattern with little bit knots here and there on the drawers’ front add to the overall beauty of it. Great job!

Thanks for the comments. We don’t have quite as much humidity here but I do use my meter and let the wood sit for a couple of weeks in my shop and I’ll get down to 8% or less. That usually does the trick especially in the summer.
