This is the first chess board I ever built. Before building this I had a few picture frames under my belt and that was about it. I did not want to spend a lot of money on this in case I made a fatal mistake. So I built it all out of scrap lumber. It is primarily oak. But there is mahogany and walnut trim in the case. I am not sure what type of wood the dark squares are, but they serve their purpose. There really is no style that I followed, I just went with it to prove to myself that I could build it. With all projects, this one taught me things not to do ever again and things to improve upon for the future.

Looks great!
Do you have any problems getting the playing pieces out of their pockets?

Unfortunately I have yet to buy the proper size pieces for this chess board. I have a manufactured wooden board and pieces that keeps me busy. But due to the depth of the dividers the pawns would stand up and the remainig pieces would lay on their side and you would have enough room to pull them out.

What wouldn’t you do again? To me, those revelations are almost more important than the things I get right!
The board looks nice!

I have built another one but I do not have the pics any more. It did not have the chess piece drawer but was a bigger chess board. It was made out of maple and a south american rosewood. I gave it to my brother. I should have him send me pics.

A great looking chess borad. I assume that you are using solid wood for the squares/ You should try veneer. A lots of different woods are available.
