Ipe Deck Bench

I built this deck and bench as part of a major backyard remodel and it has led to many relaxing outdoor dinners. I debated for a long time going with a composite plank but finally decided to go with Ipe (Indonesian hardwood). Ipe has great strength, durability, and resistance to insects and rot. It’s so hard it dulls blades and drills fast. Also watch out for splinters..they tend to dig deeper over time instead of working their way out (found this out the hard way). It is a beautiful wood and aging to a nice silver color.

Very nice bench. I like the guy laying on the grass in your sketch/plan.

Great Bench! The Ipe looks very nice. Is there a finish on it?

No finish on the Ipe. There are hardwood oils you can use..but need to be reapplied every year or so and we wanted it to silver.

Have your say...
