Keepsake Box

I take each family member to the woodworker’s store and have them wander through the stock and find a board that they like top make their special keepsake box from. Well, this time my daughter picked out a piece of Black Palm.

Having never worked with Black Palm, I was in for a big surprise.
Black Palm is a hard, brittle, and wily wood that has no real grain to it. so no mater what tool you use on it, it will shatter leaving bunches of splinters … I had more slivers making this box than I had last year!

After I had the carcass assembled with box joints and the bottom in place with dado’s I was ready for the lid, so for contrast I picked out a piece of Curly Maple or Tiger Maple if you will, That was sitting on the shelf and did a couple of inlays.

The crown and base are Mansonia, an unusual wood that blended nicely with the Black Palm and the maple.

The feet are scraps of Sepele, and the whole thing is finished with one coat of BLO and four coats of clear shellac.

I tried the Iron on laser printer trick for the name and it worked well until the shellac hit it and it bled (waaah).
so there is an etched mirror that will take it’s place.

Thanks for lookin’ and comments are welcome.

Beautiful keepsake box, Mike! Your daughter has excellent taste in lumber. The contrast of the black palm and the curly maple is striking. Love it!

the idea that you take your loved ones to the lumber to have them choose the board is brilliant! It makes the gift mean that much more! That is using your head and your heart!

Your box is beautiful, I have always been a fan of black palm!

Mike, the design is excellent and the wood colors and figure really make this an outstanding piece. Your daughter is one lucky lady to have such a great dad.
