Oak Chest

1st project post! This was my first major venture in building furniture, and was a great learning experience. I designed the chest on my own, and probably was in a little over my head! I used recycled lumber from a kitchen bartop on a remodeling job to make the four posts, and was happy with the way it ended up. Everything is made from oak, except the drawer sides, which are poplar, so this sucker is heavy! This was my first time using dovetails, and I was successful after a few early hiccups. I used drawer tape from Rockler for all the drawers, and the knobs from a local mill store. Finished in golden oak stain and three coats of poly.
Thanks for looking!

Excellent job all the way around. What kind of dovetail jig did you use? Please don’t tell me you cut those by hand your first time out!

Wow! Excellent work. You should be proud. Nice save on the recycled wood too.

What did you use to design it – pencil & paper, sketchup maybe? Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words! Charlie no, definetely didn’t hand cut the dovetails first time around. I used a craftsman jig that my father has, and it served me well, any problems came from the operator! Michael- just pencil and paper for the drawings- I hadn’t discovered sketchup until I found Lumberjocks. Safe to say that’s a much nicer way to go.
