Shared Heritage

Project by TedM posted 254 days ago 427 views 3 times favorited 8 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Here is a fun piece that I recently turned for a ‘Fun Turn’ contest at the woodturning club I belong to. The challenge was to turn something from a 6”X6”X3” block of Ash.

The piece represents a family and their shared heritage. It is symbolic, of course, of a parents hopes and plans for their children and the childs dreams of the future that this positive support gives. (Note the childs outward upward view.)

It stands almost 6” tall and the base is 5 1/2” in diameter. It is finished with wire-burned embellishments and beeswax.

I had a great time with this and got a few more ideas while turning so I hope to create some more.

Thanks for taking the time to look. Comments are most welcomed. (Please be kind :))

Very nice! Where did the inspiration for this piece come from ? OR, did you just start turning. Is the base part of the wood ? Is this piece for sale ?

John,

I had the idea for this running in my head for some time though I don’t believe that it is an original idea (what is anymore? :)). I’m sure that I picked up a thought from here and another from there. :) Yes, the base is a part of the block. As for sale, to date I have not created anything specifically for sale. However, the wife is now wondering, as the living room fills with wood boxes, bowls, etc., that it may be soon time to hit the markets. :)

I totally like this sculpture. It is similar in design to a old christmas angle display. Father, Mother, Child angle scene. It doesn’t matter that it is not orignal but that you created it with your own twist to it. I like it so much that I might try something similar myself.
