This is the first realy fancy box I have made.
The top is a bookmatched panel. The wood came from a pallet at work. Only 2 boards looked like this. Was told it is Cherry but have never seen cherry with that kind of feathering. Front and back are from another board on same pallet. Same feathering but not as pronounced.
The sides and bottom are from a crate of windshields that came from Indonisia. They look like cherry.
Bookmatched the bottom. Left all the knots in it as my wife specifically wanted those. ( she likes stuff to have a LOT of carrector, Probably why she married me ). Total of 15 knots in this peice. She is happy.
Used Walnut from another pallet for the corner trim and legs.
Had to plane and re-saw all the boards. Getting better at keeping that hand held planer level, but still practicing.
Did get to try out new Router table I built. Works good.
Total of about 28 hours in this. One of the longest projects I’ve ever done. ( My Murphy bed was about 72 hours )
Have put 1 coat of Wipe on Poly on so far. Planing on more with 1200 grit in between coats.
Would appreciate all comments and critiques. You can’t hurt my feelings I know I need to improve.
Sory. Forgot to put in the size.

I went back and looked at the photos a second time, trying to find some constructive criticism. Heck, I can’t find anything wrong with it! Excellent design and build.
The top looks more like red oak than ccherry to me.

Don’t you just love it when you turn fire wood into a wonderful keepsake. Great job. I agree with your wife. I like to make so called “defects” fit into the project and add character.
While I appreciate hand planing a bench top planer would cut a lot off your time spent on recycled wood; just learn how to eliminate the “cupping” that occurs on the beginning and end of shorter boards….(feed a longer piece of scrap wood through at the same time to keep the rollers level).

Thanks for the comments.
LesB….Would LOVE a bench top planer but it is just not in the budget. I have a lot more time then money.
When I pull the boards from pallets I usually leave the nailed ends on until after planing. That way if I am not level on the start or end, I can saw those off after.

Having been in the pallet industry for 40 years, during which time my company made about 80,000,000 pallets, and currently President of the European Pallet Association which controls the quality of a pool of 550,000,000, I often look at projects that use up our products when their life is done.
I must congratulate you: this box looks pretty good even if you purchased prime timber. From an old pallet it is amazing. I hope you complete many more such projects

Great Box!
You’re a man after my own heart Scrappy. I love repurposing wood in my projects. The look of the wood in this project is fantastic. The design and craftmanship also outstanding in my view.
I can’t tell from the photo, is that a seperate walnut cleat on the inside corners or did you dato the legs to receive the front/back/sides?

Choppertoo,
The corners are all one piece. Dado on outside edge after rounding over the inside. Last thing was to cut taper that way it was still square for cutting the dado’s.
Thank you for the nice comments.
