A Bevy of Bevels in a Walnut Wine Box

So, I really liked the sliding top wine boxes I made with maple and walnut and decided to make a couple with walnut and maple. Sounds odd, but it’s not. Maybe… Ennyhoo, I did it a bit different this time. Instead of nice, squared-off, relieved corners, I went with all beveled edges – there are (I think…) 23 bevels on this box. That’s a bunch of tiny-edge sanding! But, I believe it was worth it. I plan on lining the bottom with a black felt. Finish is Minwax semi-gloss poly.

Added two new pics – front-corner shots, showing the bookmatched end and more grain & color detail in the sides.

I did make a second one, however comma I kinda messed up sanding down that big front bevel and chewed my way into the inside. I’m attempting a cover-up fix for it and will post pics at a later date.

Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks, guys!

RogerBean – Check out the next walnut beveled wine box I post. I’ll document the mistake I made and fixed. Maybe I’m a “craftsman” after all?

Very nice; I like the contrasting woods you used and the beveled angles, especially where the top slides out.

Question on the grain direction: with the grain of the book-matched ends running up and down, and the side grain running lengthwise, is there any risk that expansion will causing cracking down the road, or is the size of the box too small to worry about this?

The bookmatched end is only about 4×4 and 1/2” thick, so movement shouldn’t be a problem. Shouldn’t…

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I had a good time making this!
