Thorsen Table Project

Project by roundabout22 posted 1028 days ago 1105 views 1 time favorited 33 comments Add to Favorites Watch

As Karson said on Freds post, just a few days left, so I figured I better get mine entered. This is going to be used as a bedside table, so I made it a little taller than the original and added a drawer. since it has to fit in with furniture already in the room I changed the look a little and used pine and cedar.

My mortise and tennon skills are somewhat lacking, so I put the table together using pocket hole screws. The cedar came from my dad’s stash, that I mentioned in a blog. It is finished with boiled linseed oil and then covered with wipe on poly.

While I don’t expect to win, I did have a lot of fun working on it. It didn’t take a whole lot of actual work time to do. I just had to find the time to work on it.

I like the contrast between the pine and the cedar. And the drawer is a nice touch too. Good job Dale.

great table!! Love the different woods together.
(I keep forgetting that this is a “competition”... it has been such a pleasure to watch everyone’s tables unfold).

Very nice, the top almost has a butcher block look to it, and the contrast is beautiful.

Thank you for the positive comments everyone.

Debbie, you are completely right. It’s amazing seeing all the variations that can come from one simple table, and being told to put your spin on it, like Scotts slate top.

Good luck to everyone who enters, everyone has put together great things.

Debbie Not a competition, But a “Woodworking Challenge” I wanted everyone to enter not do say who won, but to show their ideas. This is the artist and the construction in each of us. Picasso would paint something different from Michelangelo. That not to say that one is right and the other is wrong. It’s just to say that they see things differently, and have the talents to show us the difference.

We are now seeing everyones different sights and talents.

Great job and congratulations on the completion.

Bill, it was a great smell. I enjoyed getting the hand plane out for this piece (I could even put up with the dust created by the sander just to have that nice smell).

Like running a marathon, anyone who finishes is a winner… for to win such a contest is a matter of opinion. Some artists win best of show at a craft/art show one year, and don’t even place the following… whim whim whim.

Great job… no shame in useing those “little threaded metal dowels”. Many, many do, beginners and “big names” alike.

SWMBO said to me yesterday, “you know that looks really good.” Translation “why don’t you make another one so we can have a matched set.” I guess I’ll start getting things together. Now that Schools out, and I’m only working part time this summer I might actually have a little time to work on some projects

It’s gonna be hard pressed to compete with the Morrison-Thorsen Table Company. Karson and his crew are turning them out like hotcakse… and they’re all beautiful tables.

There a few elements in this design that I like and I’ll keep them in mind when I make something similar. Pocket screws may not be the old fashioned traditional joinery method, but my Harryism is “it’s not a flaw if no one can see it.” Mortise and tendon isn’t as hard as most people think, you just need the guts to try it.

Keep makin’ sawdust.
