This is my second cutting board (you can see my first one here). My wife wanted one that was bigger for cutting watermelons this summer. Improvements over the first one are: larger size (old-10×13…new-13-1/4×19-1/8), juice groove (for all the watermelon juice), routed finger holds for easier moving. I used Maple and Cherry. It is finished with mineral oil. There are 4 rubber feet screwed to bottom to keep it from sliding around. I got a new planer (DW734) and router (Bosch) since the last board I did so this one turned so much better with less effort. Having a planer that planes square makes a HUGE difference. Since the board was too big to send through my planer after final glue up I used a Freud 1-3/4” surface planing bit in my router which worked wonderfully.

Thanks for looking…questions and comments welcome!

Nice looking board. I also just purchased the same planer that you mentioned. However, after reading many comments from more experienced woodworkers, I was advised not to run the end grain board through the planer after glue up. Too much chance for tear out on the edges or more violent board ejection from machine. Please explain your techinique for using the surface planing bit. Do you have to build a sled to stradle the board?

Yes, I had to build a sled for the router to sit in…I will post that project later today.
