Here’s the mantle clock I made with a wood I got from a guy who sells primarily cedar, fir, and alder as building material. He had some odd pieces of exotic wood like sapele, honduras mahogany and goupia. He had about a dozen 25 foot long 6 inch wide boards of what I would have guessed is palmwood. I took a couple of the boards from him but I still can’t tell what it is even after working the wood.

Any guesses?

The wood is dense and very heavy.

The base is alder.

Nice wood. Looks almost like red oak from the pic but might be koa.

Very nice project.
I bought some wood this weekend that they called ‘Cambara’
It is a type of Mohogany. The grain in your wood looks very similar.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

anotherbrick – I have a laser engraver and then I colorfill with creme shoe polish – black. The shoe polish has not faded on projects for indoors even after several years.

cobbler – I found out that it is most probably Patridge Wood.

Nice trick with the shoe polish…I like that you can still see the wood grain through the polish .This is the first time of my hearing about partridge wood . Did your source tell you where it might come from ?How heavy is the base wood Alder ? Any thoughts as to it tipping over ?

Dusty,

the harder the wood the more translucent the shoe polish. On alder the shoe polish is jet black. As for the partridge wood, don’t know where it’s from. The alder base is pretty light but the footprint is substantial enought that tipping is no issue at all.
