walnut shell box

Well I had this idea that I would create a clam shell box. I can’t remember where the inspiration came from but I think it was basically out of the blue. Maybe I saw something on TV and the idea subconsciously got stuck there. I started discussing the idea with my girlfriend and it just so happened that her daughter had the top portion of a real clam shell. What are the chances of that? Anyhow, I traced the actual shell on the box and started carving. It’s about 4” x 4” x about 2” deep total. That means the inside is very shallow and can’t store much but I don’t think it was meant to be functional as much as it was about the thought. The actual shell was only about 1/4” or 3/8” in thickness, at best. I was trying to make it look somewhat real but somewhat usable. Anyhow I wanted to add one more element on the inside so I carved the fish, seaweed and the coral. I thought this would give it a cool little feature and maybe even a surprise when you open it.
There were some issues that came about after all the carving. This box was perfect. I was very happy with it. Until it came time to hinge it. First off it was my thinking to make a hinge. So after playing around for several hours trying to figure out how to make it I jumped in ass deep and routed out the back. The first thing I was going to do was put a piece in and then dowel the top and the bottom with a brass rod. This would make it hinge up and then out. Well I screwed up while drilling the holes and drilled one off about 1/16”. So out came the pencil sharpener and a piece of walnut. I sharpened the end and made it a plug for the holes. See picture 5. Okay so now I have this box with a big route out in the back. The second thought came around. I made a fairly bulky but neat padauk hinge and glued it in. It worked good but not great. I was happy enough and oiled it. 72 hours later I sprayed waterborne lacquer over it. It was fine at that point but I decided to rub paste wax on it. UH, dont do that. The finish came right off. So then I got the finish off and then went ahead and just waxed the oil. UH, don’t do that either. It turned greyish white. AAARRGGGHHH. Now I had to sand it down again. SO what do you think is going to happen? With all the holding and moving etc the hinge broke. I attempted to fix it 3 different times but with the wax the glue wouldn’t hold. I busted out the hinge and glued in some walnut to fill the routed section. And that is why you will see the fillers. Talk about dissappointment. I thought it was so awesome. So I just screwed a cheap hinge onto the back. Now when you open it you have to manually align it because the hinge has so much play in it it’s pathetic. It must have been a .02 cent hinge that came from god knows where.
Anyhow this is the concept. I like the idea and may do it again soon.

Sometimes things just can’t go right! I’m not completely happy with my end result but it still came out somewhat decent. Any constructive criticism positive or negative are welcome.

This is a very fine work!
IMO, the edges of the back portion of the pair is not perfectly square n straight to each other (due to the shape of the box) – so when it is in “open” position, the two halves look slightly misaligned. Why not use two hinges? What do you think?
Any other suggestion from the rest, so I can learn for making box of this shape.

The outside of the shell is nicely shaped. I think you’re off to a good start on the carving of the inside sea life, you just need to work on it a bit more. Can you make the inside of the shell more hollow and tapered to the lip? On my own work, I usually have to put a piece down and come back to it and look at it with a fresh view to get the right curves, angles and shapes. Take your time, do some drawings if that helps, or even use modeling clay to understand how to get the right shapes. The fish is a bit bulky, so ease off some of the bulk. The coral could use some texture, so far it has nice depth and shape. The seaweed has nice depth, but needs to look like ribbon, more wavy folds. Use some heavy weight ribbon as a model. You’re off to a very good start! Hope this helps.

Well, I think it is downright awesome. Too cool. I just love the shell, what a great idea and then to open it and find this. I wish I could think of things that way.

I think it’s great. I love the concept, and I’m sure you’ll absolutely nail it the next time you try one like this.

I can sympathize with you… I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made a box and been really happy with it… until it came to hinging it and things started to go south in a hurry.

Very cool. In spite of your troubles with the finish/hinge, it turned out great. Great job of carving.

Thanks for posting it.

Understand the frustrations too, but I’ve seen enough of your work to know your potential, and your a damn fine woodworker. I’ve always admired your work, and this still is cool and I think you can go back at it and start over on that hinge area and make it come out right and look good. I believe in ya.
