the base is sprayed lacquer and the top is wipe on poly. the customer is thrilled and I am glad to be done with it. the bottom left drawer is a double deep drawer with two fronts mounted and a filler between. it is also set up with steel rods to carry file folders. the sun wouldnt cooperate so the pics aren’t that good.

I really like the contrast with the drawer fronts. Actually, I really like the whole desk. It looks great in the sun or shade.

Beautiful piece that no doubt has a lot of hours in it. Nice work.

A lot of worth while effort went into that. A real beauty. Love the wood and details. Fantastic!

Great piece of work there Skeez! BTW How thick is the top?
I am wondering because I have a couple of Padauk Slabs (6/4) that I was considering for a desk top. Problem is they are wider than any planer to which I have access and I would rather not rip them down.

skeezics,
Fantastic job! I’ve got more questions than need be-but here goes, is the design your own?-what is the wood used for the drawer fronts?-and is it all solid walnut? I’ll give ya’ a break from all the questions here, just so I can say Fantastic job once again. Thanks for sharing.
Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis
p.s. Those drawer fronts are just drop dead gorgeous!

That’s a beautiful desk! Was there any stain applied to the walnut before you did your lacquer or poly? I am almost to the finishing stages of a walnut tv stand, and am not too sure how I will finish it. I like how your finish turned out, so I’m curious…
Again, very nice!

chris, the top is 1.5” thick. Hi ken, it is my own design. I never use plans so it always comes out of my brain [twisted as that may be] I may see something I like and get measurements from it but then I make it up as I go. the drawers are MDF with oak herringbone design veneer and stringing. The drawere front came from a cabinet shop and were free so I figured I may as well use em! the drawers themselves are whatever light colored wood I had laying around the shop. Some sycamore maple and poplar. These pics came out realy crappy but the legs are turned on the bottom and everything else is walnut. the walnut all came frome the same tree so the color was very consistent. There are some flaws in it and I left them there for effect. I was going for the look of an old school teachers desk.
