I carved this fella’ in a Pine knot, as I choose to do quite often.
A bit about knots….....
Pine knots are sort of like the forest’s driftwood. Anywhere a branch meets the base of a Pine tree, a knot is formed. When the tree dies and rots back into the Earth, the pitch-filled, resilient knots remain in-tact while on the ground for years and years. It is said that there are spirits that inhabit the knots that allow them to remain for so long. My job is to release the spirits!
This carving is 14” tall, 11” wide and 3” thick.
I carve using tools similar to those of a dentist. I like to add a tad of oil paint to accentuate my cuts.
