Convertible park bench/picnic table

Project by Joe Cumbo posted 1131 days ago 8192 views 7 times favorited 15 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Here’s a project that gets a work out during the summer. When you want a comfortable place to sit outside it’s a park bench. When you want to eat outside the bench converts to a picnic table. I built 2 of them and when I put both of them together as a picnic table it seats 6 people and still has plenty of table space for food and drink.

I built it out of preasure treated 2×4s. I can’t remember what book I got the plans out of but if somebody is interested I look for it.

They work pretty well. The back/top pivots and there are 2 eye bolts (one on each end) that locks the back/top either in the back or top positions. Just remember to use galvanized hardware so you wont have to worry about rust.

Joe, could I please have the plan for the convertable bench? My husband and I are planning a hummingbird sanctuary and are going to build a pergola for a table area, I’d like to incorporate four of the benches into the plan so when we have extra guests we will have enough room.
Thanks, Mabelgrace

Joe, this project brings back old memories. The following picture is of my brother and sister taken in 1957/8. Although you can’t see much of it, the picnic table at which they are sitting was made by my father with a simple hand saw, and brace and bit. It was exactly like the one you made in every detail.

Hello Joe, I have been trying for a couple of years to find plans for the “Convertivle Table Bench” that Pat Simpson did on a “Fix It Up” episode on HGTV. This looks pretty close. Could you please email me information on how I could obtain working plans on this project from you!

My email is whitehouse@mainebb.com

Also, check out my B&B website too www.mainebb.com

Many thanks in advance.

Regards
Bob Hansen

I’m pretty sure I saw plans for one of these online—one of the “free plans” sites.
Not sure where though..

They are a great idea and yours sure does looks comfy

I built these about 8 years ago from plans I had in either a book or magazine I have. I’ve tried to find the plans but I have about 25 years worth of woodworking books an magazines to go through. If I do find the plans I’ll let you know.

It’s great when projects like these come up fresh in the shuffle. Very nice work Joe. I really enjoy seeing beautiful pieces made with 2×4’s. Thanks for posting this.

Joe,

Did you ever find these plans? I sure would like to see them. This is the best looking convertible picnic table I’ve seen. Please advise, my email: ccunnin4@gmail.com

Thanks,
Chuck
