A Co-worker of mine asked if 40 dollars for an IKEA shoe organizer was a good deal? He wanted to buy 4 of them and stack them on top of each other for his wife’s shoes. They had just paid someone to install all new cabinetry in their walk in closet, but failed to include anything for shoes. So the question was, is 160 dollars for 4 shoe organizers made from press wood and cardboard inserts a good deal. OF COURSE…...that isn’t is not a good deal. So they sent me dimensions and a description of what they wanted (high end adjustable bookshelf for shoes) and I went to work.

Because cost was a factor I made the shell of the unit out of MDF – 20 bucks for a sheet at Lowes. The sides, top, bottom and back are all from 1 sheet of MDF. The shelves are made from a Sheet of Oak Plywood – 40 bucks at Lowes. Front of the shelves are Select Pine 1X2X8 – 5 dollars X 3. Decorative frame was simply choice Pine – 25 bucks for All. Top was also choice pine – 10 bucks (would have gone Select if I were doing it over again). Add screws, shelf pins, paint, primer, baseboard and trim, total cost came to $135 dollars.

Final Dimensions are 4 Feet Wide, by 40 inches Tall, 15 Inches Deep.

Only problem – my wife loved it so much that now I will be spending the summer building a Sex in the City closet for her too.

Shoes are always a problem in a house with more than one person. I thing people end up with over a half dozen min, with an unknown upper limit for some. Your solution looks very good.
