This is actually my first wood working project completed back in April ‘05.

Built from plans I received from Knotty Plans.

Finish sanded to 220 with Minwax Golden Pecan.

Lessons Learned:

  • NEVER pull a full sheet of plywood off the rack by yourself (I know, common sense). The original intent was for this to be made from red oak ply, but my local HD had the plywood mislabled. It was at about nose height so I couldn’t see it was birch instead of red oak. Normally that wouldn’t be an issue, but as I was pulling the sheet, by myself, I misjudged the last inch and the whole sheet fell edge down from 5’ straight onto my big toe. At that point it didn’t matter what was going on around me, I just wanted to get my material home and tend to my broken toe, thus the mis-matched wood.

Ouch! Birch didn’t feel any lighter than oak did it? I love kids furnitre. You did a great job. It look like bed can be used with or without the headboard. I’d like to take a look at those plans some day.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me at H.D. Brought home 2 pcs. of 3/4 oak & 1 sheet of 3/4 birch. Ended up using the birch for the back of a large open faced cabinet & it didn’t detract from the project. Nice looking bed. Like the storage. Never enough in a kid’s room.
