This is a pen and pencil set I made for my father. The box is made from a small maple board which I hollowed out. I added two Claro Walnut “holders” to cradle the pen and pencil… The pens are turned from Maple Burl.
I am not pleased with the felt, I was only able to find the adhesive backed sheets. In the future I plan on trying the dust on type.
Overall, I am pleased with the outcome. It was a nice project using cutoffs that got me into the shop.

One caveat on the blow-in (Donjer) flocking. Put down a coat of the “adhesive” which is just paint that is the same color as the fibers, let it dry and level it if necessary and then re-coat, then you can flock onto the second coat. I have done one box with it, and you will only get so much of the flocking to stick. If you are doing the flocking over a light wood like maple, the flocking may look a bit thin if the base coverage isn’t 100%.
With the Doug Stowe type pen box that I have made a fair number of, the inner channel is a groove cut completely with the grain on the top and bottom pieces, and sides are joined on to make the box, and you just cut the top piece a smidge smaller for clearance. You can then wrap your adhesive felt completely around an insert piece of wood with a channel cut with a core box bit to receive the pen. They are also a good candidate for mini-barrel hinges which are a snap to install.
