this is my first attempt at carving. Im going to try to do a nativity scene for some family and thought i would get an early start since i have no experience with carving. i did this with just a little cheap set of carving tools from Micheals. and really only used the little gauge cus i dont know how to use the other tools they dont seem to do much haha. but im going to invest in a carving knife for the other carvings in the scene.

I agree. Those cheap sets are just that cheap. I bought a good set from a friend of mine who bought himself a bigger set and they do a much better job.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A dremel or dremel type tool would be a good investment also.
I use them a lot, especially for roughing out. Matter of fact I have six hanging with flex shafts with different bits in them and four handhelds. Overkill YES but I don’t have to switch bits very often…:)
You can also make a lot of carving tools but buying a quality set is a good idea.
