I got invited to a sushi party so I decided to bring my knife for helping out. Realizing I had nothing to carry my knife in (outside to the kitchen towel I always used to use) I whipped this out in an afternoon. Originally I had a locking mechanism in mind for it but the simplicity of the sheath won me over in the design phase. The cord was originally just a necessity so it didn’t fly out but it then became a design feature as well.
-Side is Brazilian Cherry.
-Top and bottom are Poplar.
I will be replacing the cord with something nicer and probably adding a notch to the bottom for it to rest in and a small dowel on the top to help wrap the cord around.

I would prefer to use a more subtle holder like srping tension on the inside. Maybe a long oak spring? That would require cutting it apart. Good luck.

I was thinking of going with something like that but during the design phase the simple concept stood out more.

I would suggest a hinged box that traps the knife in place. That way you aren’t dulling your razor edge by dragging it in and out of the sheath.

As I mentioned above, the simplicity of a sheath won out over any kind of box or locking mechanism. This really doesn’t dull my knife any more than the standard knife block it lives in all the time. And as for sharpness, my knives hit the spyderco once a month and get honed before every use.

I made a similar sheath for my knife. I used a 1’ “rare earth” magnet to hold the sheath in place. Before final assembly, I recessed the magnet on the inside of the sheath about 1/16th below the surface of the wood. This would keep the knife from rubbing the magnet and the magnet was powerful enough to hold the blade in place. Just an idea if you make another sheath.
