With a lot of woodworking under my belt, I’ve never turned a pen until recently at the Tampa Woodworking show.
(Thanks to the Polk County/ Tri County Woodturners)
A bunch of really nice guys who were kind enough to help me try this.
I think I may be hooked….. :)
The lighter one is Maple Burl and the darker one is Walnut I think.
Sanded smooth as a cue-ball and finished in friction polish.
With it getting hot down here in Florida already this year, short shop sessions are necessary and these don’t take very long to make.
This is the Slimline model and is the easiest to make.
I’ll get a little braver after I get my feet wet.

It took longer to clean up my mess out there than it did to make the pen !

Thanks for looking and have a great day.

Eric, I’m sorry to inform you that now you’re doomed. Welcome to your new addiction. I tried a lot of things to get out of that costly penturning habit, to no avail.
You’re not alone buddy ;) Very nice start too!

Welcome to the fold. We all need an Intervention. Turning is a blast. I mess around out in my garage and sell a pen or two along the way. The .30 call bolt action pens from Penn State Industries, http://www.pennstateind.com/ are a real hot item for me. I’ve probably turned close to 50. Acrylic turning is the next step up. Remember for turning acrylic sharp tools and high RPMs….. Enjoy.

Hey Eric-
Great first time. Before you know it you’ll be looking at every cut-off with a different eye… Maybe a band or laminate…maybe , maybe. I now have hundreds of 1 X 1 X 6” sticks. Truly an addiction…

Doing seasonal work now….....huh? A lathe is definitely in my future. Maybe in La Conner first.

I am not going to compliment you on the pen, so that no one can accuse me of a codependency issue over your upcoming addiction…........(-:

.........however, my bird, Kermit, says Nice pen, Nice pen, Nice pen…..........whatchadoing?

Those turned out great. I really like the burl one. And you think that a little heat is going to keep you from doing this. Ha Once you get started you wont even notice the heat until your done for the day.

Watch out Eric, you’ll get bit by the pen bug, I’ve now turned more than 100 of them and still have fun with them.
