An Artists Perspective

Project by kolwdwrkr posted 273 days ago 741 views 2 times favorited 26 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This carving was inspired by Marco when he posted the marble sculpture. It inspired me because I could see his perspective as a carver myself, and I believe that nobody realizes how the artist percieves his or her work, the amount of time involved, and the emotions involved. In this carving we see what the artist sees, how he performs his work and his perception through his painting. We will never know his emotions towards his subject. This carving was designed and drawn by me and is going to be in my blog soon. It is carved in maple. The painting is marquetry and boasts walnut burl for her head, osage orange for her linens, cocobolo for the chair, birdsey maple for the chair seat, and an unknown for her body. In fact I’m not positive about the osage for the linens but it sounds good. I could say yellow heart. What ever. This is one of my favorite carvings if not my favorite. It’s simple yet has a lot to say. I did not cut this piece to size. It is for sale. It can be 15” x 15” and has a 2” boarder. The buyer can cut it down and put his own edge, leave it at 15” and route a raised panel detail for a door, add marquetry to the border, etc. I am leaving it unfinished as well. If anyone is interested I could cut the panel, do more marquetry, route a raised panel, etc and add finish at extra costs. Please PM me if you are interested in this piece.

Cool, excellent carving. Interesting subject and composition. I like the three planes showing. Cool combination of skills with the marquetry. Right on!

There is a lamp in an antique shop that has a woman carving a smaller version of herself. A classic looking Greek figure. It is porcelin.

This is cool. Great carving.

Hi Keith;

As always, a masterful job.

Who knows, this economic slowdown, (for some), (stop), for others, may lead you to a new career path of doing carvings and such.

You never know. Very nice work.

Really great piece of work! It sort of reminds me of Norman Rockwell’s self-portrait.

A beautiful creation Keith!

This one is my favorite of all of your carvings.

I’d like to see this with an oil finish.

The oil will really show its finest qualities.

I also love the inlay.

Wonderful work, looks like it took a lot of hours to create it. Be neat to see the process taken further by making a mold, casting the piece then making poured pulp editions. A relief print made with homemade paper.

Another great carving Keith. I love it and agree that it would look good with an oil finish.

Very nice carving. I have never carved in maple, was it hard to carve, and do you use any special tools?

Thanks for posting,
Kenneth
