My wife runs a local farmer’s market and wanted some lightweight, chalkboard signs. I threw these together this weekend with scrap 1”x4” and some 1/8” hardboard. I can’t imagine a more lightweight, compact design!

Nice lookin’ signs. Does chalk work just as well on hardboard? My first response is that it seems like it would be too slick to draw on well, but if I’m wrong, I could definitely make some small chalkboards for my kids with the scraps I have laying around.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that my wife is in charge of the painting. She’ll choose the color for the frames and finish the hardboard with chalkboard paint! You can pick up a pint at just about any hardware store these days.

Gotcha. Can you follow up and let us know how well the chalkboard paint adheres to the hardboard?

They are very practical and look nice.

Nice lookin’ sign boards … I had a problem with the wind blowing ours over so I filled a couple of #10 cans (3 lb coffee can) with concrete and tied them to the sign … Works like a charm.
