this is a raised bed on clay subsoil. prior to building, i dug duwn 6”, then trenched & drain tiled the center. dug post holes and set posts. erected 2×12 raised bed, and fencing. used bird house motiff from a garden bench i built a few years ago, on the posts. used some wild cheery sticks on the gate and plastic screening on the sides to maximize sun to plants. seems to keep out pests except those smaller than chipmunks. filled with leaf mulch/topsoil mix. all wood was treated. i have used cedar on some exterior projects with varying results. i debated on what to use on the raised beds: plastic, treated, or cedar. ended up using treated wood. i picked out some dry pieces at the lumber store.
