Last week I was at my local home center to pick up a few boards for a box I have to make for a friend. There was a guy next to me rummaging through the Oak 2×2 bin and he was less than impress with the quality of the wood, there was about 10 pieces most of them crooked and then he said out loud “ the only straight ones are full of flakes” then he left. Flakes I said to myself… humm! could this be Medullar Rays? I walked over to the bin and there they were 4 quarter sawn white oak 2×2 about 4 feet long and for $ 2.00 each!!! I went through the rest of the Oak but these were the only ones. I bought them and decided to make a display table the top is regular red oak but I think it turned out OK.
I tapered the legs by ruff cutting them on my band saw then hand planning them down to the line the aprons are routed to 45 to add style and the top has a chamfer to the underside to give an illusion of thinness. The aprons are jointed with sliding dove tailed into the legs, a technique I had never done before but reveals to be quite easy and solid for this type of project. I finished it with 4 coats of Danish oil. I am not sure of the style but I think it rminds me of stickely
Sorry about the quality of the photos I really need to work on my photography skills.
You just never know what you will find in a lumber bin.
Thanks for looking.

Please re-post this project again with good digital images. It’s worth the effort to showcase this table again so we can see those “medullar rays”. Nice table and story. We’ll be looking forward to seeing it again.
