This Valentine’s Day Box represents my latest project and my first post on here. The piece is made of Cherry and some extremely rare wood that a cabinet maker friend gave me. The sides are cut from one continuous piece of Cherry and the top piece is not veneered wood, it is simply some unknown species that I bookmatched and glued together. The bookmatching of this piece really makes the highly figured wood jump out. The splines are made of the same wood as the top panel, but they didn’t come out as bright as I wanted, but I sill like the look of them overall.
The inside was my first attempt at making dividers which came out ok, and the velvet lining is wrapped around rubber foamies to give it that plush feel. The project was finished with 6 heavy coats of a rubbing varnish. Hope you enjoy and if anyone can identify this wood please let me know. Any and all feedback is welcome!

My pleasure. Any idea of what the top wood is?

It looks like a pretty wild grained maybe a quilted maple??? The heavy grain is throwing me off.

I have dealt with quilted Maple before and this definately isn’t it. The dark brown streaks that you see actually feel like they are coming out of the wood. You always hear that you should plane with the grain, well, if you don’t with this one it will rip the board apart. Also, when you cut it it has such a pleasant odor that I have never gotten from quilted maple.

Do you have any idea’s what it may be? Got me curious now, I’m going to go to some veneer sites to see if I can match it up with something.

Awesome box!! I thought it was maple when I first looked, but studying it for a bit, it isn’t quite right. I don’t know what it is.

I’ll ahve to lookup the curly flame maple to see if that may be it. I was so surprised when my cabinet maker friend just gave me the slab. Unfortunately, I was having issues with my bandsaw and ruined a lot of it, but the few pieces I still have are just amazing. The silky nature of it makes you want to touch the box.

Nice looking box, Bio. Cherry is one of my favorites. My guess would be some kind of figured maple also.

Wonderful box!
I vote for the lid being Bigleaf Maple Acer macrophylum. It’s normally softer than sugar maple, and shreds in four directions at the appearance of a plane iron. But it’s a wonder of the forest – and it’s clear to see what you get when it’s carefully prepped and lovingly finished.
Again I say, wonderful box!

I hope Doug is right and mine turns out that well. We have almost 10 acres of mostly maple that I need to thin in the next couple of years.

Thanks Tom, but one thing to note, the top is not veneer. It is a solid 1/4” piece of wood.
