I made a planer sled to plane some wood I did not want to rip down to fit on my 6” jointer. It’s made from 3/4 MDF as a base with some side and end runners. I use shims to keep the board stable. I use hot glue to keep everything secure. Just take light passes to establish a flat surface then you can remove it from the sled and run the other side through the planer.

It looks pretty long. Do you ever have trouble with the jig bending under its own weight and affecting the quality of the planing? I like it but would appreciate your comments.

That’s a great idea!

It’s not as long as it looks. I made it 50” long. I use infeed and outfeed supports.

One of the interesting things about woodworking is the many ways in which to work wood and accomplish tasks. I prefer to clamp a rough sawn board on my worktable. With a #5 hand plane and winding sticks in just a few minutes, I can eliminate twist and high spots, and then send the board through the planer with great results.

Very interesting. I’ll have to remember this one. I recently had an instance where this would have come in real handy.

Joe, your system there works like a champ. I glued up some boards to make a couple of small panels which ended up having a slight bow to them and figured lets try making a sled and see what happens. they came out flat as can be. Its a keeper in my shop.
Thanks for the post!

Thanks brother, I can’t take the credit, I copied it from someone else. It does work well though. I really don’t use my jointer much anymore.
