pie crust sign

Project by teenagewoodworker posted 266 days ago 618 views 0 times favorited 14 comments Add to Favorites Watch

this is a little sign that i made for my friend on her birthday. it is dished out like a pie crust table with a 1/4” bead followed by a step and then a 1/2” cove and another step. i originally made one out of padauk and tried using a signmaking bit to put it in but when it was done i didnt like how it looked so i scrapped it and started again on a nice piece of figured walnut. i decided this time to make the letters like a relief carving and in doing it this way the bottom was an absolute mess so after about 5 hours of sand sanding last night i put the first coat of finish on at 3 am. the finish is just a coat of General Finishes Danish oil and they 5 coats of shellac wiped on to make sure i coat everything then i rubbed it down with some 000 steel wool and finally just lightly misted it with my spray gun to bring the luster back. overall this was a really fun project but it was hard. overall to get it done by today i put in about 10 hours last night but it is well worth it. the figured walnut really looks beautiful.

I know Victoria will love it. Even if she doesn’t know how much work went into it. Great job as always.

Another great job Dennis. You are such a brilliant teen woodworker. I wish I had had such talent when I was your age. Job well done.
