This turned out real nice. Is it a brass tack on the butt of the handle? The lines burned with wire? Also, Is that one of Debbie’s boxes the handle is in?

yes, yes, and yes :) You pass, Wayne!! Gold star haha :)

Rick is very proud of this – of course, we don’t have a lathe yet or tools… but we have a handle!!! :)

They are lots of fun. Kind of expensive for all the accessories, but lots of fun. Have you turned yet? I see some willow pens in your future.

I haven’t done anything… we decided that only one of us would take the course (saving some $$). It turned out that Rick was the only one in the course on those two days so he had undivided attention.
When we get our lathe, Rick will then teach me “all he knows” haha.

Since Rick had only worked on a lathe 50 years ago, when in school, the instructor was thrilled because there were no “bad habits” to try and correct. So, hopefully Rick now is all “good habits” at the lathe!!

And yes… some willow “something” will be in my future as long as I have some of the wood left.

Save your small willow scraps for some pens. Blanks are about 3/4” x 3/4” x 5”.

Very nice. I have got to do this for my lathe chisels. One of the first suggestions Alan Lacer made in a class I took with him, was to make larger/longer handles to fit my hands and 6” 4” body.

Very nice Rick, you better not teach Debbie too much, or you’ll never get a chance to use it yourself.
She may get hooked on it so bad, we’ll never see her on LJ again. No time for PC’s. LOL

Nice handle, the tool mfg. tend to make small handles, bigger is better.

Great job Rick. I expect you will be taking home that lathe soon. And you will have a set of tools ready to use too.

lol I may not get a chance to use the lathe once we get one – he really loved the process. I’ll be saying, “Rick, when are you going to teach ME??” and he’ll say, “soon, Debbie, soon…. ” and soon may never come :)

Good looking handle, which reminds me I’ve got a half dozen I need to make for chisels that have split or broken on me. mike

Rick, I can see your future is cut out for you. I hope you folks get your tools soon before Rick gets amnesia. I can see your gifts for next Christmas, boxes and boxes of beautiful pens. All the best in your future endeavors, johnt

Great job Rick. My first lesson in turning will be in June. I cannot wait until I can do something like this.
