Well, here is another time crunched chess board. My MIL asked me to make one for my FIL two weeks before his birthday. I did it in maple and walnut, yellow heart and purple heart pin stripe, and a maple boarder. I did a layered stain on the border with an ebony stain as a base then topped it with a blue water tint/stain. It looks kind of like denim blue jeans. I sealed the middle of the board with sanding sealer first then taped it off with painter tape and I did not get any bleed through when applying the stain. When I went to seal the stain I got some bleed over from the stained area to the sealed area. I used Zinsser wax free shellac to seal it. I think maybe the characteristic of shellac to chemically bond with existing layers led it to bleed. Or the stain was not completely dry. I was able to sand out most of the blue in the shellac. I sealed it with more shellac and finished it with Rustoleum spray can lacquer from home depot, then wet sanded to 1500 grit and then 0000 steel wool and then bees wax, all firsts for me as far as finishing goes. I did get that mirror smooth finish and a decent satin sheen. I did not have time to make pieces before I had to deliver for his birthday. I got them from Chesshouse.com.
