Have you tried doing a rough out and then drying the wood in the microwave before making the final shape? I put the rough turned piece in a closed brown paper bag and heat it in the microwave until it feels hot. The time varies with the power of the oven and size of the wood block. Take it out, open the bag slightly to let the water vapor escape and let cool. Repeat several times until the wood is obviously dry.
What you are doing is similar to a steam kiln. The bag holds enough water vapor (steam) to help balance the inner moisture with the surface moisture reducing any stress to the wood as the microwave “cooks” the water out.
If you notice small cracks forming during the process try sealing them with CA glue to stop them getting larger. If you get them early enough you can cut through them as you finish the piece when it is dry.

I haven’t quite tried the microwave but I do have some blanks I roughed out, painted with anchorseal and put in a bag. This silver maple moves so much you have to leave quite a bit of wood just to be able to true it up.
