I carved this softwood tree in a piece of Cherry. There is quite a bit of burl to this piece and some spalted wood. The whites and blues of the spalted wood really add character.

This carving measures 18” tall, 7” wide and 1 1/4” thick.

This style of carving is called pierced relief. I began with a drill and jigsaw…. I cut out all of the negative spaces and then spent lots of time shaping the tree using burs in my Foredom. I finished this piece with Howard Feed n’ Wax and 1 coat of spray urethane.

This carving is available in my shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/JoshCarteArt

Someone’s watching this tree. Very cool and a lil spooky. :)
