I just completed this project for a coworker. My wife is a little upset with me because I was supposed to build one for us first. The coworker offered me money, what can I say? LOL
This was my first real attempt to do mitered corners. A tip that I received was to cut each corner from opposite sides of the table saw. This cancels any deviation from true 45 degree if the table isn’t exactly aligned to the blade. The tip worked beautifully! I only needed a very small amount of filler to hide some gap. I probably could have gone without the filler but wanted to ensure a nice clean edge.

great shelf. Definitely holds a lot of cd/dvd’s!!
tell your wife that you can now afford extra special wood and extra special tools to make the unit even better for her!!
(notice the “new tool” slipped in there)

It came out nice. Now that you have a prototype, the one for your wife should be even better.

Good job. Yeah, always do one for somebody else first so you can improve on it the second time around.

It seems tempting to just build two of them at the same time, so all the cuts are duplicated and you end up with two finished products.

I’m glad I didn’t decide to make two at the same time in this case. With this particular unit I decided to try making the shelves with oak plywood and edge gluing a 3/4” piece of oak on the front. This process caused the project to take a lot longer than it would have if I’d just made the shelves out of solid oak. I thought the plywood would provide a bit more strength due to the alternating sheets of wood.
Last night I started building a unit for the house. This time I’m making it from all solid oak. I’ve already got all of the material rough cut and just need to joint, plane and cut to size. This version will take me about half the time the first one took.

Now, that’s a CD/DVD case. Looks like you need to buy about two and half shelves more and then it will be time to build case number two. Great looking project.
