This was a bed that I built in April 2003. A customer fell in love with this design and the company that sold it went out of business. They brought me an old black and white newspaper ad and I built it from that. The reoccurring theme that ties the pieces together is the curved sides and the simple stacked molding on the top of the case goods and bottom of the bed.
The curve couldn’t be built from a solid block of wood because the bed needed to sent into the frame. I had to make the bed corners in three pieces and miter them at 22 ½ degrees. This allowed the inside to appear more rounded. I hand shaped the outside with a hand plane and sanders.
Another challenge is the drawer front design. The drawers fronts are shaped in a bow from top to bottom with the thickest part being in the center. I then added a trim piece with a slight round over on both the top and bottom.
