Hi all, thought it was long overdue to post a project.

My mate bought a lathe for his son for Christmas but he hasn’t had much of a look in with us two using it all the time! This is my first turned bowl, made from Sapele from the offcuts bin in my timber yard.

I sanded it to 240 grit, soaked it with boiled linseed oil then a couple of coats of shellac before a final wax.

Let the fun begin.
Good job.

Bob.

We all have to start somewhere. You can only improve from here.
There are a number of good lathe tool makers in the “down under” as we in the US say. Munro makes a great bowl hollowing tool that is fast and a lot safer for beginners when hollowing a bowl. I use mine all the time.
Now you will have an entirely different view of wood in the fire wood pile. I have about 3 cords worth that are “too good to burn”.
