Rustic Bench

My first rustic bench. This was one of many Oaks that died due to the very dry year Central Texas experienced 3 years ago (we are still in a drought). I hauled this Texas Red Oak to a local mill near Austin last year. This was also some of the first lumber I dried in my homemade solar kiln. Fittingly I gave this bench to my mom as the tree came from her property. All mortise and tenon construction at a 15 degree angle. I let the wood speak for itself, just rounded the top edge over with a 3/8 round over bit. Really light sanding to maintain the texture. Two coats of Danish oil.

Great looking bench! I love the live edge—and I’ll bet your mom loves it!

That turned out nice Randy, sure has a striking resemblance to Mesquite.

Are you making it to the meeting Tuesday evening?
