Floating Shelves

My wife had asked about putting some book shelves in this area of the house. I talked her into floating shelves thinking that it would be a little easier and a little more robust to hold the weight over a 6’ section. Well I was right in my thinking for one way but not the easier way.

The last two photos show all of the support that I put in each shelf. It is 3/4” Poplar that I had and milled down to 2”. That way when I wrapped it in the 1/2” MDF I would get a 3” shelf. I finished all the ends of MDF with a dry wall mud so that it would make it look like one thick shelf and help with the paint. I still had to prime the shelves twice and sand with 400 grit paper before painting to the finish.

Shelves came out nice and smooth and you can not see any of the joints. The only issue is that she liked them so much she wants me to do this in a couple other areas of the house now.

Thanks,
Pete
